DANs/cE KAPITAL

Dans/ce Kapital Presents Flamenco Festival 2011

October 14th, 2011 - The sights and sounds of Spain will again be taking Ottawa/Gatineau by storm this fall as the 2th bi-annual international Ottawa Flamenco Festival, bringing the best in Spanish dance, music and culture to the Nation's Capital from November 4th - 7th, 2011. The Ottawa Flamenco Festival offers everything flamenco: performances by guest artists from Spain, Mexico and Canada, introductory workshops in flamenco dance and music, master classes with guest artists, and 4 groundbreaking performances.

On Friday, November 4th the festival kicks off with "De España con Amor" (FROM SPAIN WITH LOVE) at the Museum Of Civilization's Theatre, featuring renowned guest artists from Spain. Love, passion, humour and drama, portrayed through powerful dance, passionate music and vivid imagery, make this world premiere dance-theatre production an absolute must-see. Internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer Miguel Tellez, the "Fred Astaire" of flamenco, dominates the stage with grace and an astonishing sense of rhythm. Miguel will be joined by the popular Haligonian/Madrid-born dancer Maria Osende whose dance has been described as "spellbinding". The compelling sounds of the flamenco soul will be provided by the powerful voice of Maria Mezcle who, at only 24, has become one of Spain's most promising and accomplished singers. On guitar, adding an authentic Spanish flavour: virtuoso guitarist Jose Vega as well as the very creative Canadian musician Daniel MacNeil. De España con Amor will be entirely produced under the award-winning theatrical direction of Anthony Black (2b theatre).

The second night on Saturday, November 5th, the performance will be held in downtown Ottawa at the Mercury Lounge where local producer/choreographer Juliana Pulford and Ricardo "El Nino" Osorio from Mexico will grace us with a mesmerizing show, with the following members: on Guitar: Anwar Miranda, Cante: Roberto Lorente and Dance: Ricardo Osorio, Armando Rubio, Juliana Pulford.

For the third and fourth evenings of the festival, the performances will again take place at the Museum of Civilization's Theatre.

On Sunday, November 6th, experience the frenzied sound and dance of Mexico's internationally acclaimed Ricardo "El Nino" Osorio and his Flamenco Dance Company in their new full-length production of "Pensamientos" - "Thoughts" - Guitar: Anwar Miranda - Dance/Director: Ricardo Osorio - Singing: Roberto Lorente - Percussion: Armando Rubio.

On Monday, November 7th, raise your temperature with Canada's own Juliana Pulford and her seven-member dance and musical troupe, presenting Llanto - "Weeping" - Federico Garcia Lorca's lament for Ignacio Mejias Sanchez, one of Spain's most famous bull fighters. The troupe wraps up the festival with a production brought back by popular demand, considered one of the most exquisite elegies in the Spanish language. Llanto is a soulful expression of grief, loss and love. Supported by a talented ensemble that includes flamenco guitar, cello, singing, poetry, flamenco and contemporary dance, LLanto is a spectacular presentation that seeks to convey the intensity and emotion of one of Lorca's most beloved works.
