Kanika Thakar started her training in Kathak eight years ago under the direction of Guru Saveeta Sharma, a disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj. Kanika developed a passion for Kathak after she was introduced to this elegant and spectacular dance form by Guru Saveeta Sharma at Upasana the Spirit of Dance.

Kanika completed her Rangapravesh (dance graduation) with a performance at the Canadian Museum of Civilization theatre after which Kanika spent six months in New Delhi, India, advancing her dance training with the legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj.

Kanika has given several public performances in Canada and the UInited States, and most recently at Ottawa dance festival, DANs/cE KAPITAL. Kanika’s lissome and graceful physique lends itself particularly well to a colourful and elegant expression of the storytelling at the core of Kathak.
