The basic objective
of DANs/cE KAPITAL is to promote a Canadian culture
of dance within the Ottawa communities by facilitating
intercultural dialogue, collaboration and mutual
impacts on artistic creativity amongst diverse
cultural traditions which have come together in
this multicultural society. The festival's aim
is to promote this objective by concentrating
its efforts on the transcultural communication
between dancers of diverse communities and their
impact on Canadian society-the audience. DANs/cE
KAPITAL is committed to present dancers of the
highest standard of excellence within their matrix
of sensibilities and norms of presentations. The
audience, in turn, will be challenged to absorb
wider and newer horizons of aesthetic concepts,
artistic norms and cultural world views.
The project's objective
then is to provide the audience with a colourful,
culturally and historically rich and educationally
relevant experience by promoting the professional
and emergent artistic community's involvement
in Ottawa's cultural activities through traditional
and contemporary dances, based on various styles
such as classical Indian, modern, flamenço, African,
experimental and avant garde. In the process,
Upasana also accomplishes the additional objective
to create an opportunity for Ottawa artists to
work closer together in a new spirit of cooperation,
and showcase their work in an appropriate venue.
All artists or companies presented in the Festival
will perform new works based on their ownchoreography.
Based on the past
eight successful years of Upasana's presentation
of the DANs/cE KAPITAL-REVOLUTIONS IN MOVEMENT
dance festival, Upasana plans on a similar artistic
mix and style of presentation for the October
2008 festival. The dance festival-expanded to
seven days this year for the third time, which
includes daily evening and matinee performances
as well as master classes and workshops will feature
18 professional and emergent artists and companies
in day and evening performances, and 9 workshop
and master classes from the Ottawa dance community
with guest artists from Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal,
Boston, Brussels, Guinea and India.
